How Raven’s ridged texture is made
Raven is made in three steps. To build volume, the kanekalon for Raven is first backcombed with a comb. Next comes crocheting: a 0.4 mm hook for each dread, or a 0.6 mm hook when the dread is thicker. Finally, boiling water fixes the bumpy relief. Making one Raven set takes 1–3 days. For other tones, see the full textured dread collection, or learn more about dreadlock texture types.
The colour is one tone: pure jet black across every dread. It looks matte in daylight and softly glossy under indoor light. The ridges catch light in stripes rather than flat sheets. The relief covers the body of each dread; below it, the tips fall straight in clean lines. Flat thin three-strand braids without hardware are spread through the set: one per 10 DE, or one per 20 SE.
Each Raven set comes with:
- Slim silver metal beads: plain narrow cylinders placed on some dreads and kept in place by nearby thread wraps.
- Silver dread rings: small narrow rings at random points, mostly on the upper-mid sections.
- Mixed silver charms: small feather-shaped pendants, tiny stars and slim T-shaped tags on a few dreads.
- White and grey thread X-pattern wraps: thin thread in a tight crisscross around mid-strand sections, mostly white with grey accents.
- Flat thin three-strand braids: their smooth surface sets off the ridged dreads.
Note: your set may come with beads that look different from those pictured. Some photos show a large Celtic-style brooch; it is only a styling prop and does not come with the set.
Each Raven dread has its thickness (0.8–1 cm) and length checked before it is packed.
Caring for Raven
Washing: Dilute shampoo 1:5 with water and apply it to the scalp only, no more than once a week. Afterwards, rinse thoroughly and leave the dreads to dry in the air.
Detangling: A comb or brush should never touch the dreads. Separate tangles gently with your fingers. A knot that is badly tangled can be cut off with care.
Heat: Keep Raven away from saunas, hot blow dryers and any other direct heat. Heat above 60–70 °C damages low-temperature kanekalon and its relief, because this fiber is not heat-resistant. Skip conditioner as well. Conditioner loosens the thin braids of your own hair, and those braids are what the dreads sit on.
Storage: After each install, dry the set completely and store it somewhere dry. The set can go straight into its next install with no rest needed. To prevent tangling overnight, put Raven in a loose braid or sleep in a bonnet. Detailed walkthroughs are in the DaddyDread Academy.
Raven formats: DE and SE
- DE (double-ended): a thin braid of your own hair sits inside each folded dread. There is no loop, so both ends hang loose.
- SE (single-ended): each dread has a loop at the top. You place the loop on a strand of your hair, then braid that strand around the dread.
A full head usually takes 40–50 DE or 80–100 SE. New to the choice? Our guide to SE vs DE formats explains the difference.
To mix textures, buy a second set as well. For example, take 10 Raven DE plus 10 or 20 DE from a smooth set. Raven also works as a black base under an accent textured set, like our emerald Mermaid. On its own, it gives a gothic boho look.
Raven is reusable. Each install lasts 1.5–2 months, after which you undo the small braids, braid again and put Raven back in. A set lasts 2–3 installs. Decorations can be changed on request: thread colour, charm style or beads. Your country’s delivery cost and time appear just below the buy button.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does one install of Raven last?
Expect 1.5–2 months from each install and 2–3 installs from one Raven set. Because boiling water fixes the relief while the dreads are made, it holds through every install. Take the dreads out carefully, dry them, keep them somewhere dry and install them again.
Why is the fiber in Raven backcombed before crocheting?
Backcombing is the first step. It builds the volume and base structure that the bumpy surface needs. Without it, the boiling water step would have nothing to fix, and the dread would come out smooth.
How many Raven dreads do I need for a full head?
A full head usually takes 40–50 DE or 80–100 SE. For a partial install, such as front stripes or side panels, choose a smaller set.
Does the black of Raven fade or change over time?
No. Since the colour goes into the fiber during its making, it won't fade or oxidise. Every batch also comes out in the same shade. The only change is some surface fuzz from friction, which you can separate gently with your fingers.
Can I add more silver charms or wraps to Raven after install?
Yes. Any Raven dread with free space can take extra silver rings and beads, and more thread wraps can be hand-tied. No special tools are needed. Changing the thread colour between installs gives the set a new look.
