Description
Handmade from low-temperature kanekalon, Bloodmoon brings together black, red and black-red marled textured synthetic dreads, double ended (DE) and 50 cm long. The palette is a witchy black-red with three separate colours. There is no ombré and no fade.
Each set comes with silver feather and crescent moon charms, slim silver beads and white and red thread X-wraps. One thin three-strand braid is included in every ten DE. While the dreads are being made, boiling water locks in their ridged surface.

Three colours, no ombré: the Bloodmoon colour story
Each strand keeps one colour story from root to tip. Black dreads are fully black, red dreads are fully red. Marled dreads carry both colours twisted into one strand. Crimson against black looks good with dark velvet, lace or silver jewellery.
| Strand type | Build | Visual role |
|---|---|---|
| Pure black | Solid black, ridged root to tip | Base of the set, blends with dark hair |
| Pure red | Solid crimson, full saturation | Brightest accent in the mix |
| Black-red marled | Both colours twisted into one strand | Wine-tone bridge between black and red |
| Composition | 9 dreads + 1 thin braid per 10 DE | Smooth braid accent among the ridged dreads |
Bloodmoon gets its colour at the fiber stage, before any dread is made. Every batch matches the last, and the shade will not oxidise or fade. The black strands anchor the set against your own hair colour. The red and marled strands carry the accent.
Each Bloodmoon set comes with these decorations:
- Slim silver metal beads
- Some dreads carry these simple, narrow cylinders, kept in position by the neighbouring thread wraps.
- Silver feather charms
- Small feather-shaped pendants on a few strands, placed at random intervals.
- Silver crescent moon charms
- Crescent pendants that tie the set to its name.
- White and red thread X-wraps
- Thin crisscross thread around mid-strand sections, white and red alternating across the set.
- Thin three-strand braid
- Each 10 DE holds 9 dreads and 1 braid, whose smooth finish sets it apart from the ridged dreads.
Note: the brass hoop earrings, black-bead rosary necklace, black tassel rope and black-and-white photo print in some images are photoshoot props. They are not part of the Bloodmoon set.
How the Bloodmoon ridges are made
Bloodmoon is made from low-temperature kanekalon. The bumpy surface is fixed with boiling water and holds through months of wear without any product.
Each set goes through three manual stages. The process starts with backcombing the fiber with a comb, which gives it volume. Next comes hand crocheting with a 0.4 mm hook, switching to 0.6 mm when a dread is thicker.
In the last step, boiling water sets the relief of every Bloodmoon dread. A textured set like Bloodmoon takes 1–3 days of work. Before it leaves the studio, we check thickness, length and texture across the whole set.
Bloodmoon care: wash, store, sleep
Limit washing to once a week, using shampoo diluted 1:5 and applying it only to the scalp. Let the set air-dry afterwards. Never comb or brush the dreads. Work tangles apart by hand, and if a knot is badly tangled, you may cut it off with care.
Skip conditioner. Conditioner loosens the thin braids of your own hair that hold the dreads in place. Kanekalon is damaged by heat above 60–70 °C, so stay away from saunas and hot blow dryers. Before bed, put the dreads in a bonnet or tie them into a loose braid. For step-by-step care advice, visit the DaddyDread Academy.
Bloodmoon DE format and full-head fit
Bloodmoon comes in double ended (DE) format only. There is no loop on a Bloodmoon dread; it simply folds over a thin braid of your own hair. Both ends hang free. Plan on 20–30 DE for a partial install and usually 40–50 DE for a full head. Our guide to SE vs DE formats covers how the two differ.
Mixing textures means adding a second set, such as 10 or 20 dreads of another set alongside 10 Bloodmoon dreads. As an accent, try a solid black textured set, and read our deep-dive on dreadlock texture types. A smooth black set gives a contrast in surface. Worn alone, Bloodmoon gives a full goth boho look.
The set is reusable. One install lasts 1.5–2 months, and a set lasts 2–3 installs. When an install is finished, take out the small braids, keep the set somewhere dry, then put it back in on new braids. It needs no rest between installs.
Look under the buy button to see delivery time and cost for your country. Thread colour, charm style and beads can be changed on request. The photos were taken in daylight, and your screen may shift the red.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a Bloodmoon set last?
One install lasts 1.5–2 months, and a set lasts 2–3 installs. The ridges are fixed in the kanekalon with boiling water during production. They need no re-setting and no product between installs.
Can I combine Bloodmoon with smooth dreads?
Yes, by buying a smooth set as well. Bloodmoon itself stays textured. For textured dreads, boiling water is what fixes the relief. Steam is used on smooth dreads to fix the material. Both are crocheted by hand.
Why is Bloodmoon treated with boiling water?
Boiling water is the third stage, after backcombing and crocheting. It fixes the bumpy relief in the fiber. Smooth sets are treated with steam instead.
Does Bloodmoon look like natural aged locs?
Yes, that is the idea of a textured set. Bloodmoon has a bumpy, ridged surface from the first day, similar to locs that have matured over time. The fiber is fully synthetic.
Does Bloodmoon work on dark hair?
Yes. The solid black strands blend with dark hair and the braids underneath. The red and marled strands stand out as accents without clashing.
Customer Reviews
