Description
Forest Elf is a set of 50 cm double-ended smooth synthetic dreads, made by hand from low-temperature kanekalon, that go from brown-green at the crown to a deep forest green. The crown has the shadowy brown-green you find under moss on an old branch, and the rest of the length becomes a rich green, closer to fern leaves than to neon. We wanted a green that looks like a real forest.
These synthetic dreads are low-temperature kanekalon, dyed when the fiber is made, so the colour stays the same from batch to batch. The brown at the crown matters: it grounds these forest green dreads, and without it the green tips would look artificial. Summer days, humidity and a warm install are fine, but this kanekalon is not made for real heat.

Forest Elf: brown to forest green ombre dread extensions
The colour runs from brown-green at the crown to solid forest green along the length and at the tips. There is no hard line between the two. The brown looks like a natural shadow at the roots and slowly gives way to green further down. Each dread differs a little from the next, so the set never looks flat or printed.
The decorations follow the woodland idea:
- Brown thread wraps crossing in an X on some dreads, a little like carved bark
- Green thread wraps close to the base colour, which add depth when the dreads move
- Gold metal tube beads, small and few, so they shine without taking over. The beads you get may vary slightly from the photos
- Three-strand accent braids, about one for every ten dreads

Crochet dread extensions: how we make Forest Elf by hand
Every dread starts as low-temperature kanekalon fiber. In our studio we work it with a comb and a 0.4 mm crochet hook, which gives our crochet dreadlock extensions their firm, compact feel. It is crochet, worked by hand: no machines, and no thread wound around the body of the dread to hold it together.
When a dread is finished, we steam-set it by hand, one at a time, to fix the material and keep the surface smooth. Steam-set dreads hold that shape on their own. It does not wash out and never needs restyling.
Quality control has three steps: thickness (0.8–1 cm along the whole dread), even length, and a final colour check. That is how we have made more than 5,000 handmade sets in over 13 years, and why a re-order matches the set you already have. Caring for Forest Elf steam-set dreads
Care is simple. Synthetic fiber needs no conditioning and does not shed, but like any synthetic dreads it can tangle a little at the tips. Five habits cover everything:
- Weekly wash: shampoo diluted about 1:5 with water, on the scalp only, then rinse. A quick rinse is often enough, with a full wash every seven to ten days
- Air-dry fully and never use a hot hair dryer on the smooth dread extensions. This kanekalon softens above 60–70 °C, and a damaged smooth surface stays damaged
- Avoid saunas and hot tools. A warm bath around 40 °C is fine. Do not comb or brush the dreads: tease tangles apart by hand, and snip off a knot only if it is badly matted
- No conditioner. It turns the thin braids under these kanekalon smooth dreads slippery, and they start to loosen
- At night, gather the set into a loose plait or wear a satin bonnet. One install lasts six to eight weeks before the braids are redone
Cared for like this, a Forest Elf set is good for two or three installs, and then it is time for a new one. These are reusable dreads, smooth dreadlock extensions that you install again rather than throw away.
Formats and set sizes: full head DE dreads or a partial set
Forest Elf comes in DE (double ended) format only. Each dread sits folded over a slim braid of your hair, with no loop, and hangs down on both sides. Double ended synthetic dreads give two ends per attachment, so they cover more. There are five set sizes, from a few accents to a full head dread set:

DE smooth dreads fold in the middle and hang on both sides, so 50 dreads look like about 100. Most heads need 40–50, depending on how thick your hair is and how dense you want the result.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the brown crown fade or change over time?
No. The colour is added to the kanekalon at the factory, so it is part of the dread, not a coating. At the end of the last install it looks the same as in the first week, as long as you keep the dreads away from heat. These forest green synthetic dreads keep their brown shadow at the crown.
How long does the Forest Elf set last?
Each install stays in for roughly six to eight weeks before the braids need redoing. Most people install the same set two or three times before getting a new one. The colour outlasts the surface, so a set ends because of wear, not fading.
Which hair colour does Forest Elf suit?
On dark hair the brown crown blends in, and the green seems to grow out of your own hair. On light hair the brown reads as a deliberate shadow at the roots, which makes the green look brighter. Both work well with these green smooth dreads.
Can I install Forest Elf myself?

Does Forest Elf work on fine or thin hair?
Yes. Smooth dreads for fine hair work well in DE format, because each dread folds over its own braid and both ends pull on it evenly. Start with 30 DE dreads and add more if you want a denser look.
