Description
Black Lavender Grey is a three-tone ombre set of 50 cm smooth synthetic dreads, crocheted by hand from low-temperature kanekalon and sold as DE or SE. The crown is black with a purple shade, the middle softens into lavender grey, and the tips end in plain solid grey. We have shipped 5,000+ sets in more than 13 years, and this darker, slightly gothic palette is one of the quieter colours in our smooth range. These synthetic dreads are mixed to stay calm: not carnival-bright and not chalky.

Black lavender grey ombre crochet dreadlock extensions, smooth and handmade
Think of smoke at the roots, twilight in the middle and wet stone at the tips. There is no orange shadow, no green cast and no pink edge between the colours, because the colour goes into the kanekalon when the fiber is made. Lavender and grey thread wraps, silver beads, accent braids
The decorations are kept quiet on purpose. Lavender thread wraps run as X-shaped stitches and thin spirals along some dreads, carrying the middle colour up towards the dark crown. Grey thread wraps repeat the colour of the tips higher up the dread. Silver cylinder beads are few and small, and yours might not be identical to the ones photographed. Three-strand accent braids come at one for every 10 DE dreads or one for every 20 SE.

Kanekalon smooth dreads: low-temperature fiber, steam finish
Underneath it all is premium low-temperature kanekalon that arrives already coloured. Once crocheted, each dread is steamed so the material sets and the surface lies flat. Warm days, damp weather and a cosy install are no problem for these smooth synthetic dreads, and a later order comes out in the same shades. Strong heat is the one thing to avoid: past 60–70 °C this fiber starts to deform. Nothing is painted or glazed on top, so there is no coating to chip.
A comb and our 0.4 mm crochet hook are the only tools, and steaming happens dread after dread. Crocheted by hand, dread by dread. Before shipping, someone with 13 years in the studio measures the thickness (0.8–1 cm all the way down), lines up the lengths and compares the colour. The result: smooth dread extensions with a clean, even line.
Double ended synthetic dreads or single ended: DE and SE formats
You can choose between two formats. With DE smooth dreads, each piece is bent in half over a narrow braid of your hair and both ends dangle. SE smooth dreads end in a small loop; you pass a strand of your hair through it and braid that strand down around the dread until it holds. SE is handy for partial looks. Count 40–50 DE or 80–100 SE for a full head dread set, and around 20–30 DE for a partial one. Of the two, double ended synthetic dreads sell more often.

Caring for Black Lavender Grey: wash, heat, tangles
Wash: weekly, with one part shampoo to five parts water, massaged into the scalp rather than along the dreads. Conditioner stays on the shelf, because it softens the little braids the dreads hang on. Rinse in cool or lukewarm water until no foam is left.
Heat: keep hot hair dryers and saunas away. Low-temperature kanekalon deforms somewhere above 60–70 °C, and a warped surface cannot be repaired.
Tangles: no combs, no brushes. Do not comb or brush the smooth dreads; ease knots apart by hand, and trim away a really stubborn one with small scissors.
Night: a loose plait or a satin bonnet keeps the tips from rolling around while you sleep.
How to take the set out and store it
When it is time, undo the braids of your own hair, slide each DE or SE dread off and lay it on a clean towel. Let the set dry fully and do not press it while it is damp. Keep it in a dry place, in a fabric pouch or a cardboard box rather than a tight bag. The lavender and grey are part of the fiber, so storage does not affect the colour.
Mixing Black Lavender Grey with other sets
Black Lavender Grey goes well with solid black synthetic dreadlock extensions for a darker top, with curly sets in natural blonde for strong contrast, or with grey textured dreads in the same tone. To do this, add a second set to your order (10 or 20 dreads is a good start) and braid both in at the same time. If your hair is fine, pick smooth dreads for fine hair in DE: with two ends on every braid, the pull is shared. The flat dread extensions also look neat over curly hair underneath.
Being reusable dreads, they come out as easily as they go in: undo the braids, let the set rest in a fabric pouch, and reinstall it later.
A single install usually runs six to eight weeks. Two or three installs later, the grey ends are as grey as on day one and the dark crown has not turned brownish.
About the colour: under warm indoor light the lavender looks a little pinker, and under cool LED light it looks closer to steel grey. We check that every batch matches.

How long does the Black Lavender Grey set last?
Expect six to eight weeks per install. Since these smooth synthetic dreads were steamed during making, they need no products between installs. With ordinary care you get two or three installs from one set.
Does the lavender look pink or grey?
It depends on the light. In warm indoor light the middle part leans towards pink, and in daylight or cool light it reads as soft lavender grey. The black at the crown and the grey at the tips stay neutral. All these steam-set dreads come from the same colour batch, so the shade is even across the set.
How many SE dreads do I need for a full head?
A full head usually takes 80–100 SE dreads. Each SE dread has one end, so you need about twice as many as with DE for the same density. For the front, half the head or a single accent stripe, 30–40 SE are usually enough.
How do I wash this set?
Once a week, wash your scalp with diluted shampoo and do not rub it into the dreads. Skip conditioner, because it loosens the braids that hold the dreads. Let the set dry completely before you install it again or put it away.
Can I sleep in these dreads?
Yes, but tie them up first. Gather the set into a soft plait or put on a satin bonnet before bed. This keeps the dreads from rubbing against each other at night and stops fuzz from appearing on the lavender part.
