Description
Black Grey Ombre is a set of 50 cm smooth synthetic dreads, handmade from low-temperature kanekalon and sold as DE or SE: jet-black at the roots, smoke-grey in the middle, pale silver at the tips. Run your fingers along any dread and you feel a surface as flat as a polished stone. The colour sits in the fiber itself, so the run from black to silver stays even from root to tip.
Solid black dreads weave through the set as anchor tones, with slim decorative braids alongside. Black-and-white cotton thread wraps lace down some dreads in a tight cross-stitch. Small silver-tone beads and rings finish it off, and yours may differ slightly from the photos. Together they make a calm, monochrome set of smooth dreadlock extensions.

The Black-to-Grey Ombre, Built Into Every Strand
Each of these smooth dreadlock extensions follows the same path: dense black at the scalp, charcoal in the middle, softening into silver at the ends. Nothing bleeds and nothing looks patchy, because the colour goes into the kanekalon at the factory instead of being painted on later.
Look at the surface: real smooth crochet dreads, with no fuzz, ridges or bumps. The soft sheen on these flat dread extensions comes from steam. We steam every dread by hand, one at a time, which fixes the material and leaves the surface even. Up close, steam-set dreads show no coating at all, just the fiber.
The fiber is low-temperature kanekalon, the grade that keeps a flat finish for good. It is not heat-resistant, so it stays away from anything hotter than 60–70 °C. The slim 0.8–1 cm dreads also make good smooth dreads for fine hair, since each one sits on its own small braid. With 80–100 SE pieces, the attachments spread over the whole head. The black-to-silver colour runs through the core of each of these kanekalon smooth dreads, so shampoo and rain leave the shade alone.
Each dread is shaped with a comb and our 0.4 mm crochet hook, then steamed by hand. There is no wrapping instead of crochet and no machine work. Crocheted by hand, dread by dread: that is how DaddyDread makes every batch.
Before the set ships, we check thickness (0.8–1 cm along the whole dread), length and colour, and look over every wrap and braid. These handmade dreadlock extensions leave the studio only after a maker with more than ten years of experience signs off. It is true crochet dreadlock extensions work, and every set of synthetic dreadlock extensions gets the same three checks, whatever its size.
This listing has two formats. DE smooth dreads come in 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 pieces: each dread folds over a small braid of your hair and shows two ends. SE smooth dreads come in 20, 40, 60, 80 or 100 pieces. The loop at the top goes onto a strand of your hair, and that strand is braided around the dread. A proper full head dread set is 40–50 DE or 80–100 SE; for accents or a few streaks, 10 DE or 20 SE is enough.
Choosing between them? A double ended synthetic dreads piece gives two ends per braid, so it covers more, while SE gives cleaner lines at the scalp. Our SE vs DE guide shows how both are installed.
Wear and Care for the Black-to-Silver Set
- Wash about once a week: shampoo mixed 1:5 with water, worked into the scalp, rinsed out, then the dreads dry flat in the air
- No combs or brushes; tangled tips come apart with your fingertips, and a hopeless knot can be trimmed off carefully
- No conditioner, because it makes the braids that hold the dreads slippery and they work loose
- Stay clear of saunas and hot hair dryers; above 60–70 °C this kanekalon warps and the flat surface is gone for good
- For the night, braid the set into one loose plait or put on a sleep bonnet
Each install gives 1.5 to 2 months of everyday wear. When it ends, undo each braid from the scalp side and let the set fall loose.
Keep it spread out in a breathable cloth bag in a dry place instead of squeezing it into a tight bundle. That simple habit is what lets these reusable dreads go back in for a second and a third install.
The black-to-grey palette goes with almost anything: black leather, silver jewellery, charcoal knits, monochrome outfits. Add a few of these smooth dread extensions to a warmer brown smooth set for contrast streaks; just order both sets. Or wear the full set for a sharp monochrome effect.
Indoors the dark roots stand out more; in afternoon daylight the silver tips come forward. A full install of smooth dread extensions in this shade changes a little through the day. Compare colours in the complete smooth dread collection.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the Black Grey Ombre set last?
One install covers 1.5 to 2 months of daily wear. The flat finish comes from steaming during production, so shampoo, weather and repeated installs do not spoil it. Most people wear the same set of smooth dread extensions two or three times before getting a new one.
Are the tips silver or white?
Silver. The tips are pale silver-grey: clearly lighter than the smoky middle, but not white. Next to black hair they look like cool highlights, and on lighter hair they blend in softly.
Will the black-to-grey gradient fade over time?
No. The black and the silver-grey are put into the kanekalon at the factory, so there is nothing on the surface that could bleach, oxidise or flake. There is no surface dye that could turn yellow or green. Over several installs the sheen may soften a little, but the colour stays the same.
Can I install these alongside natural dark hair?
Yes, and it looks clean. On black or dark brown hair the black roots disappear at the scalp, while the silver-grey ends work as believable highlights. For a stronger change, mix the dreads across the crown. For soft highlights only, spread 20–40 pieces through your own hair instead of a full install.
Are the wraps and decorative braids permanent?
Yes. The wraps and braids are added while the set is being made and stay for its whole life. If you would like a plain version without wraps or braids, write to us and we will make one to order.
Customer Reviews
Everything looks just like the picture. Thanks!
first time trying smooth synthetic and im sold. the transition from black to grey looks expensive somehow, like more than I paid. they lay flat and don't have that 'wig-y' feel some synthetics have where you can tell from across the room. my buddy thought they were real for like a month
